چکیده

Experimental measurements of elastic neutron scattering from U resonances were used to benchmark neutron scattering models in Monte Carlo transport codes. It was found that the implementation of the free gas model to determine the scattered neutron energy and angle in popular Monte Carlo codes is inaccurate. Differences up to a factor of two in the energy dependent angular distribution were observed. The experimental data presented here provides validation of an improved free gas model that was developed by one of the authors (Dagan). This improved free gas model allows accurate simulation of the experimental results

High Energy Neutron Scattering Benchmark of Monte Carlo Computations

Neutron scattering measurements are made using an array of proton recoil detectors surrounding a scattering sample, which is struck by a beam of neutrons. Detector signals are analyzed using a state of the art digital data acquisition system, and these measurements are compared with the expected detector response based on Monte Carlo simulation of the scattering experiment using existing nuclea...

Monte Carlo characterization of photoneutrons in the radiation therapy with high energy photons: a Comparison between simplified and full Monte Carlo models

Background: The characteristics of secondary neutrons in a high energy radiation therapy room were studied using the MCNPX Monte Carlo (MC) code. Materials and Methods: Two MC models including a model with full description of head components and a simplified model used in previous studies were implemented for MC simulations. Results: Results showed 4-53% difference between full and wit...

The response of Geant4 hadronic models to the study of neutrons produced in proton irradiation to the light materials

Neutron is one of the products of the interaction of high energy protons with light nuclei. Using computational Monte Carlo codes, it is possible to calculate and predict the neutron spectrum, neutron flux, and doses by simulating the system. But the use of different hadronic models in this process can influence the results of these calculations. In this research, the response of the four hadro...

Benchmark Calculations of Neutron Production and Induced Radioactivity for a Proton and a Carbon Therapy Accelerator*

This study intends to predict the scope of neutron production and induced radioactivity for two therapy accelerators in Taiwan: 235 MeV proton and 400 MeV/A carbon ion accelerators. For radiation safety concern, much effort has been put into associated benchmark calculations to ensure the quality of predictions. Two Monte Carlo codes FLUKA and MCNPX were applied to calculate the neutron yield f...

Performance Gain with Low-Enriched Fuel and Optimized Use of Neutrons

The most challenging type of reactors to convert to low-enriched fuel are high-flux research reactors, which, along with some spallation sources, are the most important neutron sources for modern neutron scattering experiments. Advanced Monte-Carlo computer codes are now available that make it possible to track neutrons from the reactor core, through neutron guides, to instruments and detectors...
